International Women's Day
Today is International Women’s Day, and is also the first “A Day Without a Woman”. From the A Day Without a Woman website:
In the same spirit of love and liberation that inspired the Women’s March, we join together in making March 8th A Day Without a Woman, recognizing the enormous value that women of all backgrounds add to our socio-economic system–while receiving lower wages and experiencing greater inequities, vulnerability to discrimination, sexual harassment, and job insecurity. We recognize that trans and gender nonconforming people face heightened levels of discrimination, social oppression and political targeting. We believe in gender justice.
Anyone, anywhere, can join by making March 8th A Day Without a Woman, in one or all of the following ways:
– Women take the day off, from paid and unpaid labor
– Avoid shopping for one day (with exceptions for small, women- and minority-owned businesses).
– Wear RED in solidarity with A Day Without A Woman

Girls on the Run International – Girls on the Run (GotR) “inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.” and “envisions a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.” They teach life skills to girls in grades 3 through 8 using a dynamic curriculum that includes running and games.
YWCA – The YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. From lobbying for pay equity and hate crimes legislation to the increased funding for Head Start and the Violence Against Women Act, the YWCA advocates on Capitol Hill while employees and volunteers empower women and girls in our communities. Local chapters provide Domestic Violence services, Women’s Health Programs. Racial Justice Programs, Job Training, Financial Literacy Educations, STEM Education Programs, Scholarships, and Childcare Services.
CARE – CARE operates in 94 countries, reaching more than 80 million people through nearly 1000 lifesaving projects, with a focus on aiding women and girls to create permanent social changes in the fight against poverty and hunger. “When more women work, economies grow. An increase in female labor force participation—or a reduction in the gap between women’s and men’s labor force participation—results in faster economic growth.”
